Equipped for Tomorrow
50 Years of Makrolon® - A timeless invention

To take just a few examples:

  • In the construction industry, our transparent polycarbonate is very much in demand as a roofing material. Initially only used for greenhouses, today modern sports arenas are also roofed with Makrolon®. No less than 15,000 square meters of the transparent Bayer plastic is used to cover the stands of Cologne’s new soccer stadium.

  • When it comes to generating energy from sunlight, Makrolon® has a unique advantage: solar modules can be embedded in the plastic and thus become an integral part of roofing structures. Due to its high transparency, but mainly because of its great flexibility and excellent molding properties, Makrolon® permits a free choice as regards the shape and color of the roof, while simultaneously guaranteeing an environmentally friendly power supply. The potential uses for this integral system range from solar roofing on industrial plants and applications in the residential sector to power supply systems for ships.
  • In medical technology, Makrolon® has been the material of choice in many applications for more than forty years. In addition to the familiar thermal and mechanical advantages, another special property of the Bayer material plays a particularly important role in this context, namely its “biocompatibility”. Makrolon® grades specifically developed for medical applications have demonstrated their compatibility in extensive tests and are consequently suitable for such applications as the production of blood filters, provisional dental crowns and containers for blood samples. Makrolon® is also used in an innovative, needleless injection technique that replaces conventional syringes, as well as in a needleless infusion system.

Coating car windows made of Makrolon® Car windows made of Makrolon® are flow-coated at Bayer's Krefeld-Uerdingen plant.

But that’s not all: Makrolon® is also one of the world’s most successful plastics when it comes to manufacturing sports eyewear, cycle helmets, corrective lenses, cellular phone housings, automotive headlights, reusable bottles and all kinds of household appliances.
In other words: Makrolon® plays a major role in daily life – and is a truly timeless
invention.
